There seems so little time between them.
It seems like only yesterday we committed
his wife to sacred memory.
On that sad day we heard about her life
so commonplace,
but in the extraordinary ordinary-ness of it
we touched a mystery beyond our ken.
And now it's his turn
and we will no doubt hear of his achievements
of which, of course, he never would have talked.
We'll hear accounts constructed by the memories
of loved ones and acquaintances
and we will smile, and sigh
and shed a tear
and ponder on another mystery beyond our ken.
No doubt we will reflect on life
and wonder who will be the next
to be an object lesson
in mysteries beyond our ken.
